1. Don´t miss its beaches
Puerto del Carmen is a privileged location with 8 km of wind-protected beach. This makes the area very attractive for a quiet day at the beach with all services available: sunbeds, toilets, a promenade with shops, restaurants, etc. Everything ready, so the visitor enjoys an idyllic holiday.
Playa Grande
The beaches Puerto del Carmen has to offer include Playa Grande, the most popular in the area. Don’t miss on this large urban beach of quiet waters and golden sand, it’s perfect for children. Among its many services available there are showers, toilets, sunbeds, parasols, a lifeguard service, bars, restaurants, shops, etc. Playa Grande is set with everything you need for a fantastic day at the beach!
Playa Chica
As a counterpoint to Playa Grande (big beach), there is Playa Chica (small beach), not as large as its sister, as its name suggests. Nevertheless Playa Chica is not inferior in charm: more than 60 meters of fine golden sand, calm waters and many services make it a recommended Puerto del Carmen beach, one you shouldn’t miss. The solidified lava flow stretching into the sea is a beautiful reminder of the volcanic origins of the island of Lanzarote.
Playa Chica is also an important spot for scuba-diving, with several centers of underwater activities located there. The interesting sea floor of the location is home to a rich wildlife.
Los Pocillos beach
Besides Playa Grande and Playa Chica, another beach that makes it in our list of things to do in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote is Los Pocillos, located in the residential area of the same name. Los Pocillos is a calm beach of transparent waters and golden sand. Its name means the small pools of water left by the tide in the sand, kids will love playing in them!
It is definitively a more windy beach than others in Puerto del Carmen, but it has all the same services available in the area: lifeguard service, sunbeds and parasols, toilets, bars and restaurants, et. Los Pocillos is an ideal beach for the practice of sports like windsurf and kitesurf.
Other beaches in the area of Puerto del Carmen include: Matagorda, Peña Grande, Playa de Lima, Pila de la Barrilla, and Los Fariones.
2. Practice Scuba-diving, Windsurf, Cycling…
Puerto del Carmen is one of the main areas in the island for the practice of all kind of sports. If you wish to board a pleasure boat you may find them at the El Varadero leisure harbour.
On the other hand if diving into the beautiful waters of Lanzarote is what you’re after, you will find several scuba-diving centers in town ready to help you learn the basics of the sport. The area of Veril de la Tiñosa might interest you the most, it’s in Playa Chica and its crystal-clear waters are home to a plethora of sea creatures and interesting places, sunken boats included!
If riding a bicycle is your preferred method of transport, Puerto del Carmen has a cycling lane, 20 km in length, connecting it to the town of Teguise. Nothing tops enjoying the light of the sun, the wonderful landscape and the magnificent weather while riding a bicycle along the coast of Lanzarote.
Kitesurf, windsurf
The wind in Los Pocillos beach makes it ideal for the practice of windsurf and kitesurf. Don’t worry if you’re no expert: there are centers in town where qualified teachers will help you have a great time riding a board.
And since you’re there, why not give parascending a try? This particular variety of paragliding is performed at sea, propelled by a boat and everyone will tell you it’s ridiculously fun.
