Mirador del Rio located on top of Famara Cliff and with impressive views over La Graciosa island, is one of César Manrique’s most important works. It is located between two particularly significant geological features: the impressive Famara Cliff and the Corona Volcano.
Harmony between Art and Nature
From the exterior, the building is barely perceptible as it is covered in stones. Mirador del Rio shows a magnificent fusion between architecture and nature. This camouflage responds to a clear intention on the part of the architect to blend the work with the surrounding landscape, avoiding at all times any possible environmental impact or aggression.
Entry to the viewing point you walk along a corridor flanked by some traditional ceramics to get a great central hall with spectacular windows through them, one can glimpse the collection of islets that make up the natural park of the Chinijo Archipelago, among which the island of La Graciosa, considered the eighth Canary Island, stands out. Also, in the foreground, one can catch sight of the stretch of water that separates the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This stretch is what the locals refer to as the ‘river’, the geographical feature that lends its name to the viewing point.
The main hall of the Mirador del Rio is a very pleasant café. Here you can taste some of the typical products of the area, such as cheeses or jams, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee while enjoying the wonderful views.
The large glass windows that increase the panoramic view of the islets and the sculptures hanging from the ceiling are astonishing. From the balcony you can see the foot of the Famara cliff and, standing out with reddish colours, the oldest salt flats on the island.
On bright and clear days, we can contemplate the splendid views of La Graciosa and three mores small islands.
This viewpoint, in the north of Lanzarote, was built from the ruins of a 19th century military battery, and is perfectly camouflaged in the rock as only César Manrique’s skill could conceive.

- During the coldest months, from October to May, we recommend warm clothes, as the wind reduces the thermal sensation.
