The Timanfaya National Park, a must-see
Jameos is a stretch of volcanic tube in the north of Lanzarote. Its formation is the result of the eruption of the La Corona Volcano which gave rise to an extensive underground volcanic tube more than six kilometres long that flows from the volcanic cone to the sea. A volcanic tunnel is produced by the cooling and solidification of the surface part of a lava flow in contact with the air while the molten magma from the interior continues to flow. The partial detachment of the roof from a section of this tunnel forms a “Jameo”, an opening that allows access to the interior.
Based on this creation of nature, Manrique’s talent has integrated an auditorium where all kinds of concerts are held, a palm garden and one of the most beautiful swimming pools in the world. The whole is an irresistible attraction.
From Jameos to the Green Caves and Cactus Garden
The conditioned stretch of the Cueva de los Verdes is made up of a kilometre of superimposed corridors with vertical interconnections among them.
In some places it has three levels that allow the visitor to discover new spaces from different perspectives. The multiple ochre tones come from the reflections of light on saline efflorescences produced by water filtrations from the surface.
A few minutes from La Cueva de los Verdes, there is the Cactus Garden, easily recognisable from the road thanks to the large cactus at its entrance.
On this half-day excursion we visit one of the most impressive places in the Canary Islands: Timanfaya, a lunar landscape protected as a National Park since 1974 and which arose from the most important eruptions in the Canary Islands that devastated the south of Lanzarote in the 17th century. Cruise Ports in Arrecife, Lanzarote
Cruise ships visiting Lanzarote arrive at Arrecife on the island’s east coast. They dock either at the Muelle de Los Marmoles just east of the town centre or at La Boca de Puerto Naos which is very close to the centre.
Taxis are available at both docks for local transport or for island tours to coincide with your ship’s scheduled departure time. These are a good option for a group of up to three passengers who would like to see the best of the island’s volcanic attractions during their day in port. Typically these taxis charge around 150 Euros for a four hour tour, just be sure to confirm the total price (not per person) before setting off on any excursions.
