If you are staying in Puerto del Carmen, getting from Lanzarote Airport (ACE) to Puerto del Carmen is one of the easiest airport journeys on the island.

Puerto del Carmen is located only a short distance from César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, making it particularly convenient for visitors who want to start their holiday without a long journey after their flight.

However, Puerto del Carmen stretches for several kilometres along the coast. Staying in Matagorda or Los Pocillos is quite different from staying near Playa Grande, Playa Chica or the Old Town, so knowing exactly where your accommodation is located can make a difference when choosing your transport.

In this guide, we look at the different ways to travel from Lanzarote Airport to Puerto del Carmen, as well as the main areas of the resort, beaches, diving, shopping and a few local recommendations for your stay.

How far is Puerto del Carmen from Lanzarote Airport?

Puerto del Carmen is one of Lanzarote's closest major holiday resorts to the airport.

The exact distance and journey time depend on where you are staying. Matagorda is closest to the airport, followed by Los Pocillos, while the Old Town and harbour are farther west.

A direct journey normally takes approximately 10–15 minutes, although this can vary depending on traffic and the exact location of your hotel, apartment or villa.

This proximity is one of the reasons Puerto del Carmen is particularly convenient for short breaks as well as longer holidays.

Which part of Puerto del Carmen are you staying in?

Before arranging your journey from the airport, it is useful to understand that Puerto del Carmen is not just one small centre.

The resort extends along the coast and includes several distinct areas.

Matagorda

Matagorda is at the eastern end of Puerto del Carmen and is one of the closest tourist areas to Lanzarote Airport.

It has a relaxed atmosphere, a beachfront promenade and easy access to the coast.

Los Pocillos

Continuing towards the centre of Puerto del Carmen, Los Pocillos is known for its large sandy beach and long promenade.

It is a popular area for hotels and holiday accommodation and provides easy access to Avenida de las Playas.

Avenida de las Playas and Playa Grande

Avenida de las Playas forms the lively heart of much of Puerto del Carmen, with restaurants, shops, bars and accommodation stretching alongside the coast.

Playa Grande is one of the resort's principal beaches and has a long seafront promenade with numerous services and leisure facilities. Turismo Lanzarote describes it as a beach with extensive visitor facilities, including parking, showers, lifeguards and nearby restaurants and shops.

Playa Chica: small beach, fascinating underwater world

Close to the Old Town is one of our favourite corners of Puerto del Carmen: Playa Chica.

It is much smaller than Playa Grande, but its sheltered bay, golden sand and generally calm waters give it a completely different character.

Playa Chica is also one of Lanzarote's best-known places for scuba diving. Diving schools operate in the area and the sheltered waters make this part of Puerto del Carmen particularly popular with divers and snorkellers.

For visitors staying near Playa Chica or the Old Town, remember that you are several kilometres from Matagorda. When booking an airport transfer, providing the exact name and address of your accommodation helps ensure that you are taken directly to the correct part of Puerto del Carmen.

Bus from Lanzarote Airport to Puerto del Carmen

Public transport is one of the options for travelling between the airport and Puerto del Carmen.

IntercityBus Line 161 connects Lanzarote Airport with Puerto del Carmen before continuing towards Puerto Calero, Yaiza and Playa Blanca.

Aena currently indicates services towards Playa Blanca, via Puerto del Carmen, between approximately 07:30 and 21:30, with a frequency of around 30–60 minutes. Additional late services operate on Lines 61 and 162 at specific times. Aena

The bus can be a particularly economical option if you are travelling light and your accommodation is close to one of the stops.

However, because Puerto del Carmen extends along several kilometres of coastline, check where the nearest stop is in relation to your accommodation before travelling.

Tip: Bus timetables can change, so always check the latest official timetable before your journey.

Taxi from Lanzarote Airport to Puerto del Carmen

Official taxis are available from the designated taxi rank outside the airport terminal.

Because Puerto del Carmen is close to the airport, the taxi journey is relatively short compared with travelling to resorts farther south or north.

Taxi fares are metered and vary according to the applicable tariff, time of day and day of the week.

During busy arrival periods, particularly when several flights land within a short time, queues can sometimes form at the airport taxi rank.

Travellers who prefer to have their transport arranged before landing can instead pre-book a private transfer.

Hiring a car at Lanzarote Airport

A hire car can be useful if you intend to explore Lanzarote independently during your holiday.

Several car rental companies operate from César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, and Puerto del Carmen is only a short drive away.

However, if you plan to spend most of your holiday around Puerto del Carmen, it is worth considering how often you will actually use a car. Much of the resort can be explored on foot, particularly around the promenade and beaches.

If you do hire a car, check whether your accommodation provides parking.

Parking in Puerto del Carmen

Parking conditions vary considerably depending on the area.

Some hotels and apartment complexes have their own parking facilities, while elsewhere you will rely on public or street parking.

Areas around the beaches, Avenida de las Playas and the Old Town can naturally be busier at certain times.

If having easy access to a car is important during your holiday, checking the parking arrangements at your accommodation before booking can save inconvenience later.

Puerto del Carmen Old Town and harbour

At the western end of Puerto del Carmen you will find La Tiñosa, the original fishing settlement from which today's tourist resort developed. Turismo Lanzarote describes Puerto del Carmen as having grown from this small fishing village into the major resort it is today.

The Old Town and harbour have a different atmosphere from the long tourist strip along Avenida de las Playas and are worth exploring during your stay.

The harbour area is a pleasant place for a walk, particularly around sunset, and is also a good area to discover restaurants and Puerto del Carmen's fishing heritage.

Where to eat in Puerto del Carmen: our local recommendations

Puerto del Carmen offers a huge variety of places to eat, from restaurants along Avenida de las Playas to more traditional options around the Old Town and harbour.

For fresh fish and seafood, one of our local recommendations is Cofradía de Pescadores La Tiñosa, beside the old harbour — a particularly nice choice if you want to combine lunch or dinner with a walk through the older part of Puerto del Carmen.

Another favourite is La Bodega at Restaurante La Cascada, located close to the Old Town. Set within a traditional Canarian house, La Bodega offers popular cuisine in a characterful setting with historic features including its old well and wine barrels.

Both are good options for discovering a different side of Puerto del Carmen away from the main tourist strip.

Shopping and leisure at Biosfera Plaza

Puerto del Carmen is also a good place for shopping.

Near the Old Town you will find Biosfera Plaza Shopping and Leisure Centre, an open-air shopping and leisure centre in the heart of Puerto del Carmen.

As well as shops, it has restaurants and leisure facilities. Turismo Lanzarote currently lists attractions including an open-air cinema, mini-golf, escape room and children's area.

Its location makes it particularly convenient for visitors staying around the central and Old Town areas of Puerto del Carmen.

More things to do in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is much more than a convenient base close to the airport.

Its long coastline makes it easy to combine beach days with walks along the promenade, restaurants, shopping and water activities.

For divers, Playa Chica and Puerto del Carmen are among Lanzarote's main diving areas.

And if you happen to be staying on a Friday, the Puerto del Carmen Market takes place at El Varadero from 09:00 to 14:00, according to the island's official tourism information. Turismo Lanzarote

Puerto del Carmen is also a convenient starting point for discovering the rest of Lanzarote, including Timanfaya, La Geria, the volcanic landscapes of the south and the works of César Manrique.
