Lava Coast in Lanzarote: El Golfo, Los Hervideros and Janubio Salt Flats

The Lava Coast of Lanzarote is one of the most striking landscapes in the south-west of the island. Here, volcanic eruptions transformed the coastline, creating dramatic cliffs, lava fields and unusual natural formations beside the Atlantic Ocean.

A drive along this part of Lanzarote allows you to discover several fascinating places within a relatively short distance.

El Golfo and the Green Lagoon

The small coastal village of El Golfo is famous for the Charco de los Clicos, also known as the Green Lagoon.

Set inside an ancient volcanic crater and separated from the ocean by a black volcanic beach, its intense green colour creates one of Lanzarote's most recognisable landscapes.

El Golfo itself is also a lovely place to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional seaside village and admire the Atlantic coast.

Los Hervideros

A little further south you will find Los Hervideros, where solidified lava meets the sea.

Over time, the waves have shaped caves, arches and openings in the volcanic rock. When the Atlantic is rough, the water crashes against the cliffs and surges through these formations, creating an impressive natural spectacle.

It is one of the best places to appreciate the contrast between Lanzarote's volcanic landscape and the ocean.

Janubio Salt Flats

Continuing along the coast, the landscape changes again at the Salinas de Janubio, the largest salt flats in the Canary Islands.

Their geometric salt pans form a distinctive landscape beside the volcanic coast and are an important part of Lanzarote's traditional heritage.

From the nearby viewpoints, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the salt flats, the black volcanic terrain and the Atlantic.

Discover Lanzarote's volcanic south

El Golfo, Los Hervideros and the Janubio Salt Flats can easily be combined on a journey through southern Lanzarote.

They are also included in our Timanfaya and the Fire Mountains: South Lanzarote Tour, allowing you to discover these landscapes together with Timanfaya National Park in a small group with a local guide.
