If there is one place in Lanzarote that truly represents the island’s volcanic origins, it is Timanfaya National Park.
Located mainly in the municipality of Yaiza, in the southwest of Lanzarote, Timanfaya protects more than 5,000 hectares of volcanoes, lava fields and volcanic ash, largely formed during the eruptions that transformed this part of the island between 1730 and 1736.
Its black, reddish and ochre tones create an extraordinary, almost otherworldly landscape. Lanzarote is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Timanfaya is one of its most iconic natural areas.
As this is a highly protected environment, visits are regulated. Before you go, it is useful to know how to access the park, how Timanfaya tickets work and the different ways you can visit the Fire Mountains.
The main visitor area is the Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego), located at Islote de Hilario.
Here you can admire the volcanic landscape, watch the famous geothermal demonstrations and take the Route of the Volcanoes (Ruta de los Volcanes), which takes you through one of the most spectacular areas of the park.
For conservation reasons, the Route of the Volcanoes cannot be driven independently in a private or rental car. Visits are carried out according to the access conditions established by the National Park.
If you are planning to visit the Fire Mountains independently, you must purchase your ticket online in advance and select the date and time of your visit.
Tickets are currently not sold at the Fire Mountains ticket office. Availability is limited for each time slot, so booking in advance is recommended, especially during periods of high demand.
The general admission ticket includes access to Islote de Hilario, the geothermal demonstrations and the Route of the Volcanoes.

Can you visit Timanfaya with a rental car?
Yes. You can drive your rental car to the Fire Mountains, but you cannot drive the Route of the Volcanoes independently in a private vehicle, as access to this protected area is strictly regulated.
If you are exploring Lanzarote by car, you can either book your Timanfaya ticket in advance and visit independently, or combine the freedom of travelling at your own pace with our Timanfaya Express from Yaiza. You can leave your car near the meeting point in Yaiza and continue to Timanfaya with us.
Timanfaya Express from Yaiza
Our Timanfaya Express is especially designed for travellers who are exploring Lanzarote independently by car and want a convenient and straightforward way to discover the Fire Mountains.
We meet you in Yaiza, where you can leave your vehicle near the meeting point and continue with us to Timanfaya.
The excursion includes access to the Fire Mountains, the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario and the spectacular Route of the Volcanoes, as well as transport and organisation of the visit.
The experience lasts approximately 3 hours. At the end of the tour, we return to Yaiza so you can collect your car and continue exploring Lanzarote at your own pace.

Along the way, you will see craters, lava fields, volcanic cones and some of the most spectacular landscapes created by Lanzarote’s historic eruptions.
Commentary during the journey explains how the landscape was formed and the major eruptions that transformed this part of the island. Visitors are not allowed to leave the vehicle during the route, as it passes through a highly protected area of the National Park.
2. Geothermal Demonstrations
At Islote de Hilario, you can watch the famous geothermal demonstrations that reveal the intense temperatures still present beneath the surface of Timanfaya.
During the visit, park staff carry out several demonstrations showing the heat rising from underground: water turns rapidly into powerful jets of steam, while dry plant material can ignite when placed in contact with areas of particularly high temperature.
These demonstrations offer a fascinating and very visual reminder that, although Lanzarote’s major historic eruptions ended centuries ago, geothermal activity remains one of the most remarkable features of the Fire Mountains.
3. El Diablo Restaurant
At Islote de Hilario, you will find El Diablo Restaurant, designed by César Manrique and seamlessly integrated into the volcanic landscape of the Fire Mountains.
One of its most distinctive features is the famous geothermal grill, where natural heat from beneath the ground is used to cook food, providing another striking demonstration of the extraordinary thermal conditions found in this area of Timanfaya.
The building’s large windows also offer impressive views across the surrounding volcanic landscape.
4. Timanfaya’s Volcanic Landscape

5. Camel Ride in Timanfaya
At the Echadero de Camellos, located near the access area to Timanfaya National Park, visitors can take a short camel ride through the volcanic landscape.
This activity is optional and paid separately. It is not included in the admission ticket to the Fire Mountains or the Route of the Volcanoes.

- Sun protection: Even when the wind makes temperatures feel cooler, the sun can be strong throughout the year. Bring sunscreen, a hat and water.
- Comfortable footwear: Although the Route of the Volcanoes is travelled by vehicle, comfortable footwear is recommended for walking around the areas open to visitors.
- Photography: Visitors are not allowed to leave the vehicle during the Route of the Volcanoes. Take advantage of the views along the route and the designated visitor areas at Islote de Hilario for photographs.
