Geologically, Jameos del Agua is part of a massive subterranean lava tube created by the eruption of the nearby Corona Volcano over 3,000 years ago. The word "jameo" is of Berber origin and is used in the Canary Islands to define the specific opening or cavity left behind when a section of a volcanic tube roof collapses.

Through the famous Atlantis Tunnel (a hidden underwater passage stretching over a kilometer long), the cavern connects directly with the Atlantic Ocean. This allows a constant filtration of seawater that feeds the unique natural lake inside.

Unlike traditional caves, Jameos del Agua does not trigger any feelings of claustrophobia. Its spectacular wide-open space and the artistic way natural sunlight filters through the rocks create an airy, magical, and welcoming environment.

In the heart of the cavern lies a transparent salt lake, shifting in beautiful shades of deep blue as sunlight strikes the water. Hidden among its dark rocks lives the undisputable symbol of the center: the blind albino crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha). This tiny species is completely endemic to Lanzarote and found nowhere else on earth. Their total blindness and pure white bodies are evolutionary adaptations to the dark environment of the cave.

Strict Environmental Rule: To protect this endangered species, it is absolutely forbidden to throw coins into the water. Metal corrosion releases toxins into the lake that are fatal to their biology.

After crossing the lake, a volcanic stone path leads you into the Jameo Grande. Here, Manrique landscaped an exotic oasis filled with native palm trees, cacti, and fig trees contrasting against the raw black lava. The centerpiece is the world-famous brilliant white swimming pool filled with vibrant turquoise water. It is an iconic postcard image that defines the artist’s unique aesthetic.

Capitalizing on the extraordinary natural acoustics and echo provided by the volcanic dome, a majestic auditorio with seating for over 500 guests was built right inside the cave. It is a world-renowned music venue celebrated for its exceptionally clean sound, where theater seats are seamlessly integrated into the natural volcanic stone tiers.

Located on the upper terrace of the complex, this modern, interactive scientific museum lets you dive deep into volcanology, the geological history of the Canary Islands, and global seismic measurement systems.
